Glynde declared fruit fly free

Queensland fruit fly on leaf

In good news for growers in the Adelaide Hills, the Glynde fruit fly outbreak zone has been declared free from Queensland fruit fly (Qfly), following the successful eradication of the pest through the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (SA) fruit fly response program.

Restrictions on moving home-grown fruit and vegetables from within the Glynde outbreak zone have now been lifted following the completion of our eradication activities, and an extended period with no detections.

This means residents and businesses in the released parts of the former Glynde outbreak zone can once again share home-grown fruit and vegetables with friends, family, and neighbours.

In addition, growers of susceptible fruit who were within the Glynde outbreak area are no longer required to treat their produce before it can be moved to sensitive markets.

However, although Glynde has now been released, some nearby suburbs remain within the Elizabeth East fruit fly outbreak area, where movement restrictions on host produce will continue until 13 May 2026, unless further detections extend that date.

As the Elizabeth East outbreak’s 15-kilometre yellow suspension zone overlaps parts of the former Glynde outbreak area, residents should check the outbreak map to confirm whether their property is still affected and what rules apply.

PIRSA were quick to respond to the outbreak in January 2025 following the detection of Qfly maggots in a peach, with on-ground baiting and hygiene activities, supported by a 12-week aerial release of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) program.

PIRSA will continue routine trapping and monitoring in Glynde to ensure the area remains fruit fly free but residents should remain vigilant by checking fruit regularly, maintaining good garden hygiene and disposing of fruit waste correctly.
