Fruit fly life cycle

Fruit flies spread through 4 distinct stages, which can ruin host fruit and vegetables:

  1. Mature flies breed, the female fly finds host produce and stings it to lay her eggs inside.
  2. The eggs mature into larvae which feed on the produce from the inside, making it rot.
  3. As infected produce falls to ground, larvae leave the produce and bury themselves underground, developing a pupal case.
  4. Young flies emerge from the soil, leaving their pupal case behind. Flies mature into adults and breed, completing the life cycle.
