Lindsay Point

A new outbreak of Queensland fruit fly has been declared following the detection of fruit flies at Lindsay Point, Victoria.

Fruit flies were detected in monitoring traps on a Lindsay Point commercial property.

Fruit fly officers in orange overalls are visiting properties in the outbreak area to apply bait and check for signs of fruit fly in fruit.

The Lindsay Point outbreak is a unique response as the outbreak and part of the 15km suspension area are in the state of Victoria while still being part of South Australia’s Riverland PFA.

PIRSA is leading an eradication program to eliminate any fruit flies from the outbreak area and nearby surrounds as soon as possible, while Agriculture Victoria will work with any commercial businesses that now need an accreditation to move fruit.

All residents and businesses within the Lindsay Point outbreak area will be receiving information from PIRSA about the outbreaks and associated quarantine, detailing what part they can play in preventing its spread.

If you live in a red outbreak area, follow PIRSA’s tips:

  • Keep fruit on your property – do not share, sell or give it away.
  • Pick your ripe fruit and vegetables.
  • Collect fallen fruit and dispose safely for your area – see Disposing of fruit and vegetables during an outbreak or call the Fruit Fly Hotline to find out how.
  • Check your fruit for blemishes and maggots.
  • Call the Fruit Fly Hotline on 1300 666 010 and seal the fruit in a plastic bag if you suspect fruit fly. Commercial fruit movement restrictions are in place and all host material must be approved by PIRSA before leaving an outbreak area.
