Community awareness
We work with communities, growers, and businesses to stop fruit fly from spreading, and to support those affected when outbreaks happen.
This page outlines how PIRSA helps raise awareness, provides support, and invites everyone to play a part in protecting South Australia’s produce.
How we raise awareness
We help people understand what fruit fly is, why it matters, and what they can do to help stop it. This includes:
- running seasonal campaigns on radio, social media, and in print
- putting up signs and billboards at key travel points in SA and interstate
- working with councils, schools, and community groups to build shared responsibility
- translating key messages into multiple languages to reach more people.
How we support communities during an outbreak
When fruit fly is found, we step in to help affected communities with timely, local support. This includes:
- sending printed materials and updates to households and businesses
- hosting drop-in sessions and community events
- making sure residents and growers know what’s happening and what to expect
- helping residents understand safe disposal, baiting and garden access.
How we help industry and small business
Fruit fly can cause serious disruptions to businesses that grow, sell, or handle fresh produce. We provide:
- prevention advice to reduce the risk of infestation
- clear information about compliance and outbreak zones
- help to navigate movement restrictions and access support where available
- tools and guidance to keep operations going during restrictions.
Our Fruit Fly Hotline
The Fruit Fly Hotline is open to everyone. You can:
- report fruit fly or maggots in fruit or vegetables
- get help understanding rules and restrictions
- ask questions about access, treatment, or disposal.
